Quick answer: to compare commercial refrigerator energy efficiency, do not start with the biggest number on the datasheet. For HoReCa distributors, importers and kitchen buyers, the real question is not “Which refrigerator uses less energy?” It is:

Which refrigerator does the required job, in the customer’s kitchen, with sensible electricity use and supportable documents?

That sounds obvious. In practice, many comparisons still start with one attractive figure: annual kWh, an energy letter, insulation thickness or a compressor brand. Those are useful, but they answer different questions.

This guide shows how to compare them together.

1. Start With the Job, Not the Rating

Before comparing energy data, define where the cabinet will work.

A refrigerator in a hotel kitchen does not face the same conditions as one in a café, bakery or prep area. Ambient temperature, door openings, loading habits, cleaning routine and required temperature all change what “good” looks like.

Ask first:

  • What product will be stored?

Two suppliers may quote energy use for similar-looking cabinets, but the figures are not comparable if the test basis is different. Before comparing kWh, ask for the product category and test standard.

For buyers, the practical request is simple:

Please confirm the test standard, climate class, net volume, temperature range and which components are included in the stated energy consumption.

Check whether the figure includes:

  • compressor
  • fans
  • lighting
  • controller
  • defrost heaters
  • anti-condensate heaters
  • condensate evaporation
  • other electrical components

 

Also check the unit. Some suppliers state kWh/24h, others state kWh/year. Convert before comparing:

kWh/24h × 365 = approximate kWh/year

Then look at the operating assumptions: ambient temperature, relative humidity, loading, door-opening sequence and lighting. If those are different, the kWh figures are not a fair comparison.

3. Use the Energy Label to Shortlist, Not to Decide

Energy labels are useful because they help buyers screen similar products quickly. But a label should narrow the options, not make the final decision.

Use it to answer:

Is this model worth a closer technical look within its category?

Do not use it to answer:

Is this the right refrigerator for this kitchen?

For that, you still need the application details: climate class, temperature range, net volume, usable shelf layout, door or drawer configuration and the supplier’s documentation.

For EU projects, also check whether the product is actually inside the relevant ecodesign or energy-labelling scope. Some commercial refrigeration products are treated differently, and some configurations may be excluded or require separate assessment. When in doubt, ask for the label, product fiche, Declaration of Conformity and test report rather than relying on a brochure line.

4. Read Climate Class Together With Energy Use

A cabinet can look efficient on paper and still be the wrong choice for a hot kitchen.

Climate Class tells you the rated ambient condition. It does not replace kWh, but it gives kWh context. For demanding HoReCa environments, Climate Class 5 is often discussed because it indicates suitability for hotter conditions than a mild indoor room.

The buyer’s question should be:

Can this cabinet hold the required temperature in the customer’s real environment, and what is the stated energy use under the relevant test basis?

Do not compare a cabinet rated for a mild condition with one rated for a hotter kitchen and conclude that the first is “more efficient”. They may be built for different jobs.

Thicker insulation can help reduce heat ingress. It is not a complete efficiency story.

A cabinet’s result depends on how insulation, door sealing, cabinet construction, airflow, evaporator, condenser, compressor, refrigerant and controls work together. A well-known compressor brand does not guarantee a well-matched system. A thicker wall does not fix poor gaskets or weak airflow.

Ask suppliers to explain the cabinet as a system:

Once the products are genuinely comparable, use a table. It stops one attractive figure from taking over the decision.

0.84 × 365 ≈ 307 kWh/year

Useful number. Still not enough on its own.

A professional buyer should use the CC650A example to ask better questions:

  • What documents support the stated Energy Class A?
  • Is the 480L net volume matched to the intended shelf or GN layout?
  • Is Climate Class 5 appropriate for the customer’s kitchen?
  • Can the supplier provide the label, DoC, test report and rating plate?

 

The lesson is not that 80 mm insulation, R290 or a monoblock system automatically makes one cabinet better than another. The lesson is that these details should be read together with temperature range, climate class, net volume, documents and after-sales support.

Is lower kWh/year always better?

No. It is only better when the cabinets are comparable in category, capacity, temperature range, climate class, loading, door openings and included components.

Should I compare the energy label or annual kWh?

Use both. The label helps shortlist similar models. Annual kWh helps estimate operating cost. Neither should replace application suitability.

Why do similar cabinets show different energy figures?
