What is BSCI?

The Business Social Compliance Initiative (BSCI) is an industry-driven framework established in 2003 and managed by amfori, a global business association for sustainable trade. It provides a structured system for monitoring and assessing workplace conditions across international supply chains.
BSCI is built on internationally recognized principles, including the ILO conventions, the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, and the OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises. Its scope covers eleven core areas: freedom of association, fair remuneration, occupational health and safety, protection of young workers, prohibition of forced labor, ethical business behavior, non-discrimination, decent working hours, prohibition of child labor, no precarious employment, and environmental protection.

How BSCI Works

Participation in BSCI is not a traditional certification. Instead, it operates through independent, third-party audits that evaluate a facility’s compliance against the amfori BSCI Code of Conduct. Audit results are rated on a scale from A to E, with follow-up intervals determined by the rating achieved. The framework emphasizes continuous improvement rather than a simple pass-or-fail outcome.
